Collinsville Sectional Tournament

Thank you! to everyone who played in our Unit's first "live" tournament since 2019. Collinsville IL hosted a sectional on October 1-3, 2021 at the American Legion.

Partnership chair was Gail Dare and the tournament chair was Charles (Ken) Keltner. The director in charge was Joan Paradeis. There were fewer tables than previous years, but everyone had a good time.

Congratulations to Ken Keltner of Highland IL and Bob Sievers of Champaign IL (photo), who were awarded the Harrison Trophy for winning the Saturday Open Pairs (9 tables entered).

Other event winners were:
Friday Afternoon Open Pairs (8.5 tables): Mike Giacaman & Jack Bryant
Friday Evening Swiss Teams (9 tables): Gail & Sterling Dare, Ken Keltner, David Williams
Sunday Swiss Teams (12 tables): Judy Eaton, Nell Schneider, John Burgener, Karen Erlanger

A list of all players who won masterpoints is here. Complete results from all events are here.

Special events at clubs

District 8’s Fall Sectional-at-Clubs (STaC) is fast approaching. Only face-to-face games can participate in the STaC. The event dates are  Monday, October 25 through Sunday, October 31. All masterpoints will be silver! Find clubs near you and play all that you can to get those silver points.

October is Club Appreciation Month, and face-to-face clubs can run two weeks of club championships. If you choose to run some of these sessions as team games, the award will be 5% gold, up to .25.

When:  Sunday, Nov. 14, 2021 (2-session event - 12:00 and 4:45)

Where: ONLINE on BBO (Bridgebase.com)

Pre-registration by Nov. 8 required.

Entry Fee:  $20.00 per person for 2 sessions

Using BBO to play and take lessons

Many of the clubs in District 8 have gone back to face-to-face play. It is so important to support your local club; it takes a lot of time, effort and money to run these clubs.

Unfortunately, we are still in a pandemic and some players do not feel comfortable going back to the local clubs. The Central and Southern Illinois Consortium is still offering a full schedule of online bridge through Bridgebase.com (BBO). This schedule includes weekly masterpoint games and free lessons and workshops.

Free lessons will begin again in October. All are online on Zoom.
Lori Moore will be teaching intermediate/advanced lessons beginning on Thursday, October 7 at 3:00 p.m.  She will be using the book “Beyond Beginning Bridge Using 2 over 1” by Jim Ricker.
Janet Jones will be teaching beginner lessons using “Beginning Bridge Using 2 Over 1”, by Jim Ricker. These lessons will begin on Wednesday, October 20 at 9 a.m.
Kyle Blocher has been teaching advanced lessons on Wednesdays at 12:30 pm and we hope he'll continue.

The best way to learn is not only taking lessons but practicing what you have learned. Playing a few times a week -- virtually, in person or joining practice tables -- will strengthen your knowledge as you compete against others.  If you have any questions about upcoming lessons, don’t hesitate to call Janet Jones at 618-518-0341 or Lori Moore at 309-838-8085. You can find schedule updates and the Zoom links on the home page of the Central Illinois Virtual Bridge Club: http://virtual.illinibridge.com
