By the time you read this, Unit 223's final Sectional Tournament will have been held, October 2nd thru 4th in Caseyville IL. Results for the McCord Race (most points accumulated by a Unit 223 player in Unit 223 Sectionals) will probably be announced in the December Advocate. Until then, a few things are still going on in the Unit.
October is Charity Month. Your local clubs can host as many Charity Games as they wish for extra masterpoints. One of those games may benefit a local charity. Please encourage your Club Manager to earmark one game, after holding an ACBL Charity Game, to benefit Youth Bridge Camp. Last year, $1000 was raised in the District to support Youth Bridge Camp, held each summer at Lake Williamson near Carlinville IL. It would be nice to meet or exceed that amount this October.
The District 8's annual Sectional-at-Clubs event will be held October 26 through November 1. During that week, local clubs will be hosting games that pay silver points.
On Sunday, November 8th, District 8 will host the North American Pairs finals in Champaign. Qualifying games were held at local clubs earlier this summer. If you qualified for the District final, be sure to ask your club manager for a qualifying slip to take with you to Champaign. You may not be admitted without it.
Election of Officers was held in Paducah at the Cobb Sectional Board Meeting. Officers elected are:
Ron Brotherson, President
Jay Coleman, Vice-President
Paul Hartke, Vice-President Elect
Tom Wynn, Treasurer
Doug Edwards continues as Business Manager
Karen Coe, Secretary
Other Board Members are Pam Ames, Bob Cundall, Kate Dickens, Al Grant, Janet Jones and Joann Musgrave.
Also selected at the Unit Board Meeting in Paducah, were this year's recipients of the Good Will and Jo Echols awards.
Paul Hartke (left) was selected as the Good Will Recipient. Not only is he a truly gracious and friendly player, but he has also worked hard to support our Unit as a board member and as chairperson of the Crossroads Split Regional in Effingham.
The Jo Echols Award is presented to a Unit member who has promoted bridge education in the Unit. Jo Echols Award recipient Ron Brockman has been chosen for his contributions as a bridge teacher at Echo Bridge Club in Paducah. The Unit Board has been told that Ron has been doing a particularly fine job and sharing his expertise with his students.
Congratulations and many thanks, Paul and Ron.
