“When tempted to fight fire with fire, remember that the Fire Department usually uses water.”
Anger at the bridge table usually does more harm than good, and rarely makes things “even.”
Try an experiment. Conjure up a compliment without sarcasm, and see what happens.
Charity Pro-Am AuctionThe Charity ProAm Auction game, held at Bridge Haven on August 29, 2010, raised $3500 for Backstoppers.com. For this event, a Bridge Pro was someone with 2000+ ACBL master points. “Amateur” bridge players bid to play with a bridge pro. The dollar amount bid by the amateur was donated to Backstoppers. |

The St. Louis Regional, August 9 –15, 2010, was a great success. More than 1500 tables filled this annual event, with more than 10, 000 master points earned by 848 different players. Of poignant interest to many, the strati-flighted Sunday Swiss was named in honor of Mary Hruby, an outstanding volunteer for years, who died suddenly earlier this year. Members of her family received a plaque honoring Mary as a player, partner, Board member, Partnership Chair, and friend of many.

The Regional at Tunica (Robinsonville) MS, was a fun event, as usual. Local players enjoyed success. Jack Bryant was the seventh highest scorer, with 124 master points. This was higher than the MPs won by Mike Cappelleti & Mike Passel. Actually, Jack’s winnings were only 1 MP less than Passell’s and Cappeletti’s scores combined. Way to go, Jack!
Also winning points were Karen
Erlanger, John Burgener, Hatchie Greene, Carole Benkelman, F.Eric Thompson,
and Donald Klingsick.
News of making Life Master frequently occurs at regionals, as players seek that elusive “gold.” This year, there was an unusual happening. There were three new life masters from ONE team at this tournament over three days of team events. The team consisted of (photo, left to right) Jay Shah (Bronze LM) and Jo-Ellyn Ryall of St. Louis, Orvin Lindell of Lafayette (IN) and Dale Kenrich of West Lafayette (IN).
Quipped Jo-Ellyn: “My partner, Jay, had a full head of hair when we first started playing together at tournaments so I could win Gold. Now, you may notice, he doesn’t!”
Also enjoying success at the Fort Wayne Regional was
Debra Romero (photo, right) & Ron Sholes (Springfield IL), who finished fourth in Friday’s Open Pairs.
