Mark Kessler, 74, passed away in Springfield IL after a very short illness.
Mark and his brother Gary Kessler owned Recycled Records, one of the oldest stores in downtown Springfield. Mark was an expert on its eclectic inventory, which included everything from vinyl records and stereos to beer signs, vintage jewelry and sports memorabilia.
The store and Mark were institutions in Springfield. In 2019, the downtown merchants’ association honored Mark with its Lifetime Achievement Award.
One of District 8's leading players, Mark had almost 9200 career masterpoints and a long record of success in local, regional and national tournaments. He had an upbeat attitude and a great sense of humor that made him a fun partner and opponent.
Mark was planning to close the store and retire this year. He was looking forward to traveling with his wife Kathy and their dog, Ace, and he wanted to play more bridge. He hoped to one day win a national championship and was certainly good enough to make that happen. He just needed more time.
His legions of friends and the entire community of Springfield will feel this loss. Our condolences go out to Kathy and Gary and Ace as they say goodbye to a special man who was taken from them way too soon.
