 Old Home Week in Urbana

A special visitor at the Illini Regional was Chip Martel, who grew up in Urbana and is widely recognized as one of the best bridge players in the world.

Chip began his bridge career here while a student at University High School. He earned his BS degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a doctorate from the University of California at Berkeley. He retired in 2013 from a career as a computer science professor at UC Davis.

Chip has won seven world championships, including four Bermuda Bowls, and 34 North American championships. He'll be going for his eighth world championship in a few months. A week before our regional, his team won the U.S. trials to select a team to represent the USA in the next Bermuda Bowl in China in September.

Chip was a guest at the District 8 Board dinner on Saturday evening at the regional. He's shown here with tournament chairmen Mike Halvorsen and Karen Walker.
