IN MEMORY OF VIVIENNE HERTZ

District 8, Unit 223 lost a director and a life-long bridge player when Vivienne Hertz passed away on Tuesday, March 27, 2018. She was born on July 26, 1928, in Pontiac IL and moved to Kankakee with her family as a child. She graduated from Kankakee High School, Class of 1946, although she attended high school for one year in Alexandria, Virginia, where she worked in the Pentagon during WWII.

In 1950, Vivienne received her B.S. degree in Elementary Education from Illinois State University. She married her high school and college sweetheart, Donald Hertz. They were married for 66 years and had four children. She had fourteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

After college, Vivienne was an elementary school teacher in Kankakee IL and Del City OK. She moved to Carbondale in 1965 and subsequently earned an M.A. in English, Ph.D. in Higher Education and a B.A. in Art, all from Southern Illinois University. In 1968, Vivienne began teaching Technical Writing at the School of Technical Careers at SIU and taught there until her retirement in 1988. She also taught at military bases throughout the world and gave lectures in England and the Philippines. In 1980, she was named the outstanding teacher for the School of Technical Careers and she served in SIU’s Faculty Senate from 1980-1982. For ten years Vivienne was the editor of the Journal of Studies in Technical Careers.

When not teaching, Vivienne enjoyed tennis, golf and bridge. She was a member of the ACBL from 1950 until her death and was a life master in bridge. She was the director of the Saluki Bridge Club in Carbondale until her death. She was also a member of the First United Methodist Church in Carbondale. Vivienne enjoyed world travel and meeting people. Vivienne had a zest for life, was spontaneous and courageous. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends and all of her bridge buddies.

Memorials to the Donald Hertz Scholarship Fund made in care of the SIUC Foundation are the preferred remembrance.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS

Just a reminder that the Effingham Crossroads Regional will be held again from June 18-24 at the Effingham Holiday Inn. It promises to be a good tournament so let’s all make a commitment to support this local event. There will be a game for everyone in a relaxed atmosphere. For more information, look at the tournament schedule on the ACBL website or email the Tournament Chair, Paul Hartke, at palo@mchsi.com

TO ALL BRIDGE PLAYERS

Plans are in the works to bring Jerry Helms, a professional bridge player, writer and teacher to Cape Girardeau MO, September 19-20 for a bridge seminar. A group from Cape Girardeau went to one of his seminars and the members are very enthusiastic about what they learned and experienced.

For him to come to Cape Girardeau, there needs to be at least 48 participants. The cost of registration will be $250. This will include lunch every day and the sessions will be about 5½ hours each.
