IN MEMORIAM

John Kohlbecker of Munster passed away on May 12, 2012, a month short of his 93rd birthday. He had enough points to be a Life Master, but Life Master was not his goal. He just enjoyed the fun of the game while playing with friends.

John and his wife, Lois, were introduced to duplicate bridge about 40 years ago in Dolton IL. They gave it up and didn’t play for a long time, until John and his best friend, Bob Schumm, tried it together. They played as partners for about 20 years because they enjoyed it. They were happy to have a good score, but it didn’t spoil the game if they didn’t do well. They were the most congenial of partners.

Besides his fascination with bridge, John and his wife took two or three cruises every year. John commented, “I could live on a cruise ship sailing forever.” He fished annually with 15-16 like-minded buddies from throughout the country at a remote fishing camp in Canada. He was a pilot in World War II flying B-26s and C-47s and continued his keen interest in flying by keeping up with every new computerized version of flight simulation.

We will miss the presence of the vibrant, young-at-heart man — his friendliness, his unassuming manner, his kindness, and his ready smile.

SILVER LIFE MASTER

Tom Bolton of Crown Point became a Silver Life Master on April 3, 2012, capping a long on-again off-again relationship with bridge, which began in the ‘40s when he played with his family (though not scientifically). He quit for a while, but then took it up again when he became a student at Purdue, and where he was introduced to duplicate bridge.

In the 60s, after another hiatus, Tom played occasionally in various local games. Then, after his early retirement as an engineering supervisor at the former Inland Steel, he devoted more time to bridge. Tom joined ACBL in 1983. He added more games to his weekly schedule until bridge became more like a job —becoming more serious and losing the fun aspect. Now he just plays occasionally — on some Tuesdays.

Tom is an avid golfer, which takes precedence over bridge. He likes to fiddle around with do-it-yourself projects. He has much woodworking equipment — a desk and a sewing center for his sister being his most ambitious projects. He used to fix everything, but nowadays that’s an impossibility for a do-it-yourselfer. For example, Tom used to tune up his own cars, but those days are long past.

Jim O’Connell is Tom’s primary partner. Jim writes: “For someone who doesn't play very often, Tom is very easy to play with. Like many Purdue engineering grads, he is very analytical in his approach to the game and is a fine player. He could have reached the rank of Silver Life Master many years ago if he had continued playing.”

Congratulations to Tom Bolton for having earned this milestone in his bridge career! His bridge talents are significant and his membership in the bridge community makes a positive contribution to us all.
