CLUB SPOTLIGHT:  HIGHLAND DUPLICATE BRIDGE CLUB

by Brenda Ford

Thank you for the opportunity to tell you a little bit about the Highland Bridge Club. This is a photo from a few years ago when we did some celebrating with our Monday night bridge group.

Before the pandemic we averaged five to six tables each week. We met on Mondays at 6:30 p.m. at 110 Main ST, Highland, and was directed by Raymond Ford. Our group was made up of wonderful, friendly people who enjoyed each other’s company and a great evening of bridge. Unfortunately, we have not met since March 9.

Returning to bridge at this time is very much in limbo. We are anxious to return to play as soon as it is safe. Right now we do not know when that will be.

In December, we missed our annual get together with all kinds of snack and desserts.

For the health and safety of our players, we will have to wait and see what the future holds for our club and others throughout the area.

I hope you all had a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. May 2021 be better for all of us.

MENTORS ARE NEEDED

Are you ready to help someone else with his/her bridge skills? We have the perfect opportunity for you.

As I’m sure you are aware, Central Illinois and Southern Illinois/Paducah have paired together to form a bridge consortium to play virtual bridge until we can play in person. There are several games available each week, so if you haven’t done so, check out the schedule on the website or visit the Facebook page.

Two of the games being offered are Mentor/Mentee games, where a player with more points partners with a player with fewer points. One of the MM games is an open one, but a newer one being offered is more limited. What this means is that the mentor can have 1000 points or less and the mentee can have 200 points or less. Players having points within the mentor range are needed. There are players out there with few points, and would love to play with someone a little more experienced. Teaching/mentoring gives people just starting the confidence they need to continue playing the game of bridge.

You may be just the person who a beginning player needs. You don’t need to know a lot of conventions or even have that many points. You just need a commitment to help someone become a better player. You may even be surprised what new skills you learn while teaching someone else!

If you would consider being a mentor, you can email me or contact your club director. It’s a nice way to teach a new person to love the game of bridge. I’m actually a mentor in the limited game, but a mentee in the open game. Both of them are a lot a fun for me; I’ve learned things from my mentor, but, hopefully, my mentee has learned some things from me.
