IN MEMORIAM
Frances Haughey of Gary passed away on November 22 at the age of 88. She was a bridge player for almost 80 years. She began playing duplicate bridge in the 60s and was a Silver Life Master. She liked bridge because it was such an excellent mind game, and she had a good head for it. It kept her happy after her husband died and the nest emptied. She loved going to games, planning for games, and planning her trips to get points from the big tournaments. She was a regular at the Chicago tournaments. Lately, she played more computer bridge and, consequently, made many friends across the country. Her children were caddies at bridge tournaments that were held at the old Hotel Gary. Caddies earned big money at that time — $15 to $20 for a weekend!
Doris Eley recalls all the fun they had together at tournaments. They always tried to figure out how many people could fit in a room for two in a hotel — generally, they worked it out so that eight could share a room. Cathy Mason commented on what a very good bridge player Frances was in her heyday. She said, “Frances was the kindest person and would do anything for you. I played with her to the end because I liked her.”
We are sorry to have another of our
bridge family leave the fold.
