In the 14+ years that Champaign IL has been hosting its Memorial Day regional, the biggest attendance by far was in 1994 when Illini basketball coach Lou Henson played in the Thursday Swiss Teams. Between autograph signings and conversations with Illini fans, Lou played some pretty good bridge and won four masterpoints.
Lou was a celebrity then and a legend now. The sixth winningest basketball coach of all time, his career total is 779 victories, 423 of them during his 21 years at the University of Illinois. He retired from UI in 1996, but he and Mary still have a home in Champaign, where they're both in demand for university and community events.
Although Lou and Mary haven't had time to get serious about duplicate, they're avid party-bridge players who play frequently with friends in Champaign and New Mexico, where they spend the winters. They enjoy a challenge, too, and in late November, they found time for one more "summer" bridge game in Champaign with two local Life Masters, Bob Gieselman and Karen Walker.
The Hensons are in Las Cruces NM now, playing golf, watching basketball and playing as much bridge as they can. "One of these days ...," Lou says, he's going to go after some more masterpoints, but for now, he says he enjoys the mental workout he gets from playing rubber bridge.
Illini Champaign Regional -- May 20-26, 2008
It's not too early to begin thinking about spring and our Unit's annual regional, coming up Memorial Day week in Champaign. We're back at the spacious Hilton Convention Center with two on-site hotels -- the Hilton Garden Inn ($89 bridge rate) and Homewood Suites ($99, which includes breakfast). You can make your room reservations online with the links on the tournament schedule page.
Here are the top masterpoint holders in Central Illinois Unit 208 and their career point totals as of December 7, 2006. The first 18 players on the list are ranked in the top 100 of all players in District 8 (see the District Top 100 list in this issue).

Mary Hickman, 84, of Decatur IL died from congestive heart failure on October 24 at Manor Care Health Services in Decatur.
A graduate of James Madison University in Harrisonburg VA, Mary was a substitute teacher and hospital volunteer during her years in Decatur. She was also active in her church and many community organizations.
Mary was a supporter and promoter of bridge in Decatur for many decades. She was co-owner and director of the Commodore Bridge Club and attained the rank of Silver Life Master.
Mary is survived by Bill, her husband of 61 years, and their five children, 11 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Our sympathies go out to her family and the many friends she made through bridge in Central Illinois. She was a sweet lady who will be missed by all.
