Imogene Reed Reaches the Gold Life Master Milestone

Imogene Reed (Smokey to her friends) has been playing bridge for over 60 years. In 1956, she lived in New Orleans and began playing at the New Orleans Country Club. She said that she would get slips of paper with awarded points on them. When she would get four or five slips, she would mail them in to ACBL and they would register the points.

In 1957, she and her husband moved to Carbondale IL and, at that time, Carbondale did not have a duplicate game. She heard about a Friday evening game in Herrin IL and she talked one of her friends, Pat Baysinger, into going with her. When Pat said she did not know how to play duplicate, Smokey said that she would teach her on the way. The game was held at the LyMar Hotel, and they came in first!

Eventually two duplicate games were started in Carbondale, one which was started by Doris Harry Denzel, and is still in existence.

Imogene earned her Life Master rank in 1975, and continued to go to tournaments until just a few years ago. She now plays in games in Carbondale, Marion and DuQuoin. She has had many partners through the years, including Pat, Jane Stakman, Jerry Klover, Vivian Hertz, and Monika Plum.

Imogene has been a mentor and an inspiration to many (me included). At 97, she is still an excellent player and always has some words of advice that her bridge friends call “Smokisms”.

CLUB SPOTLIGHT

The Unit 223 Club Spotlight for this Newsletter is the Edwardsville Duplicate Bridge Club.

The Edwardsville Duplicate Bridge Club was established in 1997 by Ruby Nelson. Ruby loved Bridge and was an excellent player.  It didn’t take long for the Friday night bridge game to become the spot to be for many players.  Ruby always encouraged new players and worked hard to pair players together for successful partnerships. As a tribute to her, the Edwardsville sectional is now called the Ruby Nelson – Edwardsville Sectional.

Ruby and her grandson, Andrew Carver, ran the club for 15 years. At that time the club was transferred to Ms. Glenda Piek. Glenda continued the strong partnership traditions, and with the help of club directors, Krys Jarosz, Bill Rotter, Kadie Davis and Pam Ames, managed the club until her passing last September.

The Club is now run by Kadie Davis and Pam Ames. Our Friday evening game starts at 6:30 and is held at the Immanuel Methodist Church at 800 N Main, Edwardsville IL. We provide hand records and post game results and announcements on Live for Clubs at www.acbl.org. We also teach bridge lessons.  If you are interested in playing or the lessons schedule, please contact Kadie Davis at pkatbridge@gmail.com.
