"Life is more manageable if you think of it as a treasure hunt rather than a surprise party." Ditto, bridge. There are legal ways to determine how the cards are likely to be distributed. Shape (not just high-card points) is critical to good play of the hand as declarer or defender. Counting to 13 is good practice. You can do that, even as dummy. |
On July 9-10, a sectional-rated championship event was held at Maryland Heights to determine who would represent the Greater St Louis area in the “Missouri Bragging Rights” KO competition against Kansas City (held annually at the August regional in St Louis). Twenty-one teams competed for this honor. Winners of this year’s event are:
Flight A (2000+): Jack Bryant, Rod Beery, Kenny Bland,Tom Oppenheimer, Nancy & Alan Popkin
Flight B (0-2000): Ed Wang, Dave Drennan, Laura Sholten, & Dan Spangler
Flight C (0-750): Beth Meteer, Mopsi Hanley, Sandra & Marvin Meinz
These players will play against Kansas City’s finest on Saturday, August 13, at the St Louis regional.
The ACBL Instant Matchpoint Game is the only club event awarding gold points. Section top pays one (1) GOLD point for each direction, with the remainder of the first place award in sectional-rated half red/black. The other place awards pay half red/black.
This Wednesday night game will be held at Bit o Bridge at Lake St. Louis country club, a wonderful facility. Directed by Janet Vontz, Wednesday night’s game regularly has 12+ tables. This event may be larger, of course. In addition to masterpoints, here are four other reasons for playing in this annual event:
See your score instantly after each deal is played.
Receive hand records for analysis.
Receive a booklet with complete analyses of the deals by national champion and author, Larry Cohen.
National winners will be recognized on the ACBL web site and in the Bridge Bulletin.
Unit 143 membership is 1172, with more than half having less than 100 masterpoints. Many thanks and kudos to those involved in promoting our vigorous newcomer program!
