Message from the Presidentby Chuck Zalar, Unit 208 President The Unit 208 Board of Directors met at the sectional tournament held in Downs in July. A number of matters of interest to our members were discussed. As most of you know, Unit 208 unit reimburses area clubs for the additional charges made by the ACBL for special games such as North American Pair qualifying, Sectional-at-Clubs, and worldwide and instant matchpoint games. We do this to enable our Unit members to participate in these events and win extra masterpoints without paying the added sanction fees. This past year, the unit reimbursed Unit clubs $4223.50 for these fees. In addition to these reimbursements, we paid $800 in travel awards to Unit members who won their flights in the District 8 Grand National Teams, to assist them in defraying the expense of attending the finals at the Nationals. We continued this funding even though our Unit tournaments brought in only $3,317 during 2008. It's a demonstration of our recognition that clubs and their local players are the lifeblood of bridge. Your participation in Unit sectionals and the Champaign Illini Regional enables us to offer the lower entry fees for the special games at your local clubs. Here's a schedule of the Central Illinois Unit and District 8 tournaments for the next year: Peoria Sectional -- Hult Health Center, September 4-6, 2009 Riverton (Springfield) Sectional -- Riverton IL Eagles Club, October 2-4, 2009 District 8 North American Pair Finals -- Riverton IL Eagles Club, November 14-15, 2009 Fall Sectional-at-Clubs Week -- Local clubs, November 2-8, 2009 Bloomington Sectional -- Downs Middle School, Downs IL, January 8-10, 2010 Winter Sectional-at-Clubs Week -- Local clubs, January 29- February 4, 2010 Peoria Sectional -- Hult Health Center, March 12-14, 2010 District 8 Grand National Team Finals -- Riverton IL Eagles Club, May 8-9, 2010 Champaign Regional -- Hilton Garden Inn & Homewood Suites, May 25-31, 2010 We're especially fortunate to have the finals of District 8's two major championships -- North American Pairs and Grand National Teams -- right here in our Unit. We hope you'll take advantage of these close-to-home opportunities to play in national events and that you can attend as many of our other tournaments as possible. We all remember the quest we were on when we sought to become Life Masters. In the process, we've made good friends from all over the state by playing in these tournaments, in addition to winning masterpoints. Encourage your newer players to share your experience and attend. It’s worth it! Membership note: If you're a non-Life Master who has let your ACBL membership lapse -- or if you're a new player who hasn't yet joined ACBL -- you should consider the benefits of paying your dues before the end of the year. Effective January 1, 2010, the requirements for attaining Life Master status will change from 300 to 500 total masterpoints. The new requirement will not apply to you if your ACBL dues are current as of end of 2009 and if you maintain continuous membership until you become a Life Master. So if you're not currently an ACBL member, now would be an excellent time to join! Click here to join as a new member or click here to renew your membership. Talk to us: Your Unit officers and the volunteers on the Unit Board are here to help you.
