We have lost two clubs from last year. The Denzel Bridge Club in Carbondale IL has disbanded. The director, Carolyn Taylor decided not to continue and there was no one to replace her.  Recently, the director of the DuQuoin Duplicate Bridge Club, William McLaughlin, passed away, and the manager, Leona Bullock, is not able to continue without him. Following is a shortened version of Bill’s obituary:

William McLaughlin

William Dean “Bill” McLaughlin, 64, of Centralia passed away Tuesday, March 10, 2020 at his home in Centralia IL. He was born on August 11, 1955 and was the son of Dr. Dean and Thelma (Bierman) McLaughlin in Sullivan IL. He is survived by several brothers and sisters, a step-mother, and nieces and nephews.

Bill was a 1973 graduate of Sullivan High School and continued his education at Southern Illinois University Carbondale where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Centralia. He had a passion and a true gift for cooking and was famous for his mouthwatering, homemade apple pies, clam chowder, chocolate chip cookies and homemade rolls. He had a green thumb and grew amazing gardens that allowed him to create delicious dishes and can flavorful vegetables for future use.

Bill was no stranger to a game of bridge, attending bridge clubs for many years. For the last several years, he served as Director for the DuQuoin Duplicate Bridge Club. Bill love to travel, was a devoted son, and was considered the family historian.

Bill’s dedication to his family and his kindness to all will not be forgotten.  He will especially be missed by all of his bridge friends and the DuQuion Duplicate Bridge Game is a loss to many in the Southern Illinois Area.
