CLUB SPOTLIGHT

For each newsletter, a different club from Unit 233 will be featured. This time the Paducah Duplicate Club is the Club of the Month.

Paducah Duplicate Club has been in existence since the 1950s. It started out only on Thursday nights at the American Legion’s building. Jo Echols, who was the club owner/manager of the building where we are now, had the building built to the specifications that would be a good facility for bridge games.

The Paducah Duplicate Bridge Club bought out her club in 2012. We continued the Thursday night game, but included other games on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and the third Sunday of the month, as a party game. We have food we all bring in to share at 1:00 and the game starts at 1:30. We have discontinued our night games as the bridge population has gotten older and driving at night is not so much fun anymore.

Our club had a huge setback several years ago. Street sewer drains were being replaced and we had a torrential rain. Our club flooded over eight inches. Our carpet, of course, was destroyed, along with anything not any higher off the ground. We lost cards, all kinds of paper products, anything that was in the bottom drawers of file cabinets and furniture. With a lot of hard work from so many of our members (I was really impressed with so many volunteers from our membership who were eager to help get our club up and running again), we were able to start fresh again in less than two  weeks.

Our club continues to thrive and we have some really good fun together. Our club membership is down, as it sadly is in lots of places as our membership gets older.

We have periodically had different series of beginner and intermediate lessons given. We also participated in the ACBL affiliated, Bridge in a Day.. Our club meets at 1723 Kentucky Avenue in Paducah. Anyone interested in playing here, please contact Jane Baker at jane015@comcast.net .
