Illini Champaign Regional -- May 24-30, 2011
We hope to see a great turnout of Unit members at our annual Memorial Day regional, coming up May 24-30 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Champaign. We have spacious playing facilities in the convention center, along with free parking, convenient restaurants and non-stop hospitality. You can check out the schedule in the March Bridge Bulletin and on the tournament web page.
Take advantage of the special bridge rate of $85 at the Hilton Garden Inn for booking for three nights or more. A reservation for one or two nights is $95 at the Hilton. Bridge rate at the adjacent Homewood Suites is $105, which includes daily breakfast and weekday dinners. For phone reservations, call 217-352-9970 (Hilton) or 352-9960 (Homewood). Please reserve early, especially if you need two beds or a smoking room (a limited number of smoking rooms are available at Homewood).
We are saddened by the recent loss of three of our Central Illinois bridge friends:
Dr. Fred Crockett (left) of Danville passed away in February at age 84. Fred made Life Master in 1976 and was a long-time supporter of clubs in Danville and Champaign. During World War II, Fred was admitted to the last class of the Tuskegee Airmen. After medical school, Fred and his wife Lou moved to Danville, where he was a surgeon and general practitioner for three decades. He became a leader in the early years of the civil rights movement and made many statewide headlines. A feature story about Fred's fascinating life was published on the front page of the Danville Commercial News. The story is here.
Bev Upp (center) of Bloomington died in February at age 68. Bev was a Life Master who was an active player at clubs in Bloomington and Champaign. She served as a first lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps during the Vietnam War. After her Army service, she worked as an obstetrics nurse and an occupational health nurse. Bev's obituary is here.
Ron Vogel (right) died in March at age 67. A Life Master, Ron played in the Thursday-night game in Peoria the evening before his death. After earning a degree in engineering and physics from St. Ambrose College, he became a commissioned officer in the US Navy and served as a nuclear weapons officer on aircraft carriers in the Mediterranean during the Six Days War. Ron's obituary is here.
