When tempted to fight fire with fire, remember that the Fire Department usually uses water.”

Anger at the bridge table usually does more harm than good, and rarely makes things “even.”

Try an experiment. Conjure up a compliment without sarcasm, and see what happens.

Charity Pro-Am Auction

The Charity ProAm Auction game, held at Bridge Haven on August 29, 2010, raised $3500 for Backstoppers.com.

For this event, a Bridge Pro was someone with 2000+ ACBL master points. “Amateur” bridge players bid to play with a bridge pro. The dollar amount bid by the amateur was donated to Backstoppers.

Pros Marvin King and Doug Moore, gloating over the $3500 raised for Backstoppers.

Kudos to Chuck Ettelson and pro Carol Schaffer, first overall!

Pro Gail Hawkins & Kay Cohen, second overall

Tony Globe and pro Jackie Sincoff, third in section C.

Hatchie Green (right) & pro Mark Boswell were fourth overall. Mark wasn't available for a picture, so Jackie Sincoff stepped in. (Thank you, Jackie.)

August Regional

The St. Louis Regional, August 9 –15, 2010, was a great success. More than 1500 tables filled this annual event, with more than 10, 000 master points earned by 848 different players. Of poignant interest to many, the strati-flighted Sunday Swiss was named in honor of Mary Hruby, an outstanding volunteer for years, who died suddenly earlier this year. Members of her family received a plaque honoring Mary as a player, partner, Board member, Partnership Chair, and friend of many.

Tunica Regional

The Regional at Tunica (Robinsonville) MS, was a fun event, as usual. Local players enjoyed success. Jack Bryant was the seventh highest scorer, with 124 master points. This was higher than the MPs won by Mike Cappelleti & Mike Passel. Actually, Jack’s winnings were only 1 MP less than Passell’s and Cappeletti’s scores combined. Way to go, Jack!

Also winning points were Karen Erlanger, John Burgener,  Hatchie Greene, Carole Benkelman,  F.Eric Thompson, and  Donald Klingsick.

Fort Wayne Regional

News of making Life Master frequently occurs at regionals, as players seek that elusive “gold.”  This year, there was an unusual happening. There were three new life masters from ONE team at this tournament over three days of team events. The team consisted of (photo, left to right) Jay Shah (Bronze LM) and Jo-Ellyn Ryall of St. Louis, Orvin Lindell of Lafayette (IN) and Dale Kenrich of West Lafayette (IN).

Quipped Jo-Ellyn: “My partner, Jay, had a full head of hair when we first started playing together at tournaments so I could win Gold. Now, you may notice, he doesn’t!”

Also enjoying success at the Fort Wayne Regional was Debra Romero (photo, right) & Ron Sholes (Springfield IL), who finished fourth in Friday’s Open Pairs.

199er Championship sets new record

This semi-annual championship event again set a new table record: 42 tables in the morning (maximum capacity) and 19 tables in the evening session.

Jane Ettelson, chair, said: “I want to thank the volunteers, Jackie Baker, Bill Bunn, Bob Janis, and Chuck Ettelson, as well as the directors, Donna Coker and Mark Ehret, for making the event run smoothly. I also want to thank Sandy Springer for her excellent catering. Most importantly I want to thank the participants, who gave up a beautiful afternoon and evening to compete at the bridge table. Wishing everyone continued success in bridge.”

42 tables in the morning game. Betty Politte & Tony Ponzar (above) were first overall in flights A & B. Mary Ann Shephard & Lee Steuby were first in Flight C. (sorry, no photo)

19 tables in the evening session. Lannon Corley & Roxy Kessler were first in all three Flights (A, B, and C).
