News from Northwestern Illinois Unit 239

Editor:  Karen Flood, St. Charles IL     tkflood@comcast.net

Congratulations, Alma!

There is a saying, “three times a charm,” and our unit has a “charming” member who was recognized three times at the spring luncheon on April 12.

Gold Life Master Alma Karas received the top Mini McKenney medallion for the 2500-5000 point category for both District 8 and Unit 239. In the same point category, Ms. Karas also received the Ace Of Clubs award for Unit 239.

Last, but certainly not least, Ms. Karas received the Unit 239 Goodwill Award. This award is given to an individual who is always available and performs tasks above and beyond. It is the District’s way of saying “thank you” and “job well done.” Congratulations, Alma!

Welcome to these new members:

May you have many enjoyable hours at the bridge table with Unit 239 members.

The Northwest Illinois District has not produced a new Life Master in the last two months. Now I know there are several of you just shy of this recognition, so go play some bridge and earn those last masterpoints so you can achieve your goal (and I can highlight your bridge career in a future column). However, there are several advancements, which I am pleased to report:

New Junior Master: John Carlson, Galena; Lori Huttner, Roscoe; Karen Lewis, Rockford; Jerome Lietza, Geneva; Kathleen Ordway, Rockford; Judith Weber, Machesney Park.

New Sectional Master: Beverly Anderson, Somonaum; Beverly Hecht, Geneva.

New Regional Master: Richard Pleniewicz, Byron; Marie Solvie, Elgin.

New NABC Master: Dorothy Berg, Bartlett.

New Bronze Life Master: Richard Gunderson, Earlville.

New Silver Life Master: Karen Anderson, Batavia; Joan Bailey-Murray, Rockford; Vicki Standley, German Valley.

Our Silver LMs speak

Our three new Silver Life Masters were asked this question: “What is your best advice for reaching this milestone?”

Karen Anderson advised me to find a partner who plays the same system I do and play often with that partner. Attending tournaments frequently is another good way to earn points, Ms. Anderson added.

Joan Bailey-Murray first responded “Wow” to the question, but quickly added that one should just enjoy the game and show up! Undoubtedly, regular attendance will help one reach a milestone.

Our third silver lifemaster, Vicki Standley, replies: "Try to play with people that are at your level or higher. You can always improve your game. My bridge partners are the best; they are the reason for my success.  Play as often as you can; just like anything else, you do get better with practice.”[DS]

Inter Club Championship Games

Six pairs playing at Unit 239 games placed in this national competition, which took place in May. Coming in first place overall, earning 10.53 masterpoints, was Bob Duhme. His partner, from another unit, was Jim McKinney.

Other unit members placing were Roger Dieringer and Karen Pickelsimer and Karen Anderson and Charles Nier.
