In Memory

Former tournament director Jim Chiszar of Naperville IL died on April 29 from complications following open heart surgery. He was 67.

Born and raised in South Bend IN, Jim graduated from Ball State University and worked as a teacher and purchasing agent. He began his career as an ACBL tournament director in the early 1990s and was a regular on the directing staffs at District 8 tournaments.

Jim loved fine dining, and he used to enjoy assignments in downstate Illinois, in part because the cities there offered an option that wasn't yet available in the Chicago area: Steak 'n' Shake restaurants. When he directed the sectionals at the Illini Union in Champaign IL, he ate every meal -- eight during the three-day tournament -- at the campus Steak 'n' Shake a few blocks away.

Jim retired from tournament directing last year. He and his wife, Patty, moved from Naperville to Sarasota FL, where he enjoyed playing in local duplicate clubs and tournaments.

Jim was a Silver Life Master who truly loved the game. He was devoted to his family and the puppy he received as a retirement gift from the Chicago Contract Bridge League. He'll be remembered for his sense of humor and his devotion to our game and will be missed by all.
