DIAMOND LIFE MASTER

To become a Diamond Life Master you need to have accumulated 5000 masterpoints. Frank Yoder has achieved this daunting and outstanding accomplishment.

Born in Bedford, Indiana and raised in Goshen, Frank learned bridge, as so many of us have, from his parents at the age of 14. He attended Carleton College in Northfield, MN (famous for “THE” Jesse James bank robbery) majoring in government studies and probably too much bridge. He began playing duplicate in the ‘60s and became a Life Master in 1970 at the tender age of 27 at a Wabash Sectional.

From 1989 to 1992 he ran the games, taught bridge, directed, and created schedules for the Fort Wayne area. Frank moved back to his home town of Goshen in 1994, and his presence has added to the South Bend Bridge Club’s formidable strength in the bridge world.

Frank feels the most important effort should be directed toward the new players. He feels that they are important to the future of bridge and should be made to feel comfortable.

GOLD LIFE MASTER

Marian David helps to make South Bend Bridge Club a tough place to play and win. She plays a smart, competitive game and certainly deserves the title of Gold Life Master. Her club members are extremely proud of her.

Marian was born in Boonville, Indiana and graduated from Indiana University. She started playing duplicate in 1976 (learned “social” bridge from the housemother in her sorority house). Her father informed her that he was not paying for a B.S. in Bridge — so she hit the books!

One of Marian’s first partners was Dean Duncan. Thirty-four years later, they are still partners. Her other longtime partner is Ren Singleton, who helped Marian win gold points and was with her when she became a Silver and Gold Life Master. Another of her regular partners is her husband, Denny, whom she met on e-harmony two years ago. And, yes, they “discuss” hands. Marian says that sometimes the ride home is rather quiet! Marian thanks all her partners — especially her “standing” partners — Jim, Joan, Lena, June, Ren, Dean, and Denny.

SILVER LIFE MASTER

Raj Kohli is a professor of Finance at Indiana University in South Bend. It is through his intervention that the South Bend Bridge Club has one of Indiana’s best sectional sites at IUSB, an inviting and comfortable place to play bridge.

Raj was born in India, and has a lovely wife, Manju, who works with the SBCSC. They have a daughter, Risha, and a son, Rishbh. Raj, as many of us have, started playing bridge in college, but really got involved with duplicate when he came to South Bend in 1990. He is a member of the directors’ staff.

 BRONZE LIFE MASTER

Barbara Myers was born and raised on the South Side of Chicago, and was the “baby” of the family. At Clay High School in South Bend she was a cheerleader strutting her stuff during basketball and football games. Her mother was an avid bridge player and a bridge instructor during the ‘50s and ‘60s.

Barb attended Indiana University, but quit to marry the love of her life, Jim Myers. She has three daughters, four granddaughters, and one grandson. She and her friends have played contract bridge since high school, and when Jim died several years ago, she was introduced to the joys (and agonies) of duplicate bridge.
