'Tis the Season

Having just got through the ordeal of Thanksgiving with a minimum of overeating and family squabbling, I think of the original meaning of the holiday, before it became the rest day before the biggest shopping weekend of the year. The Pilgrims, who were outcasts running for their lives, had a big hoedown to give thanks to God for all his blessings. These people had just survived a horrific year, and had lost something like a third of their original number to starvation, exposure and disease and still found something to be grateful for. Sort of puts things in perspective for me. So as we get ready for our various holidays, take time to be grateful for three things every day. If you played bad bridge, at least you weren't working. If you were working, at least you got paid. If you got stuck in traffic, you weren't at home listening to your teenagers crab at you. Well, ok, that one is so Me. Be grateful for the problems you have.

Speaking of grateful . . . the committee chairpersons would be so grateful for any help you can provide during the upcoming national tournament in St. Louis, March 8-18. Volunteers are needed every day before every session. We also need help planning events and cleaning up after the whole event is over. So I'm sure you can pencil in some time to come and help. To make it easier, Sheryl (Finkenstadt) added a link to the home page of unit143.com. It is highlighted in yellow. It says "Your Help Is Needed, click here"

As a thank you, the unit provides a hospitality suite for the volunteers of that day. So between sessions you can go up and have a drink and snack and relax in a lovely suite. If you would like to help but don't know your availability, you should still call to get your name on the list and someone will work with you on the schedule. So please call Mary Lou Weyerich at 314-991-5658 or email her at weyerich@swbell.net. Be sure to thank her for taking this task on, because our thanks are the only pay she gets.

I would like to wish everyone a lovely holiday season, and a healthy and prosperous New Year.

Y'all Play Nice Now,
   Marie
