Youth Bridge Camp 2014

Campers and staff from 16 states met in Carlinville IL on June 22-28 for the fifth annual Youth Bridge Camp. Forty-two students ages 10 through 15 enjoyed a week of bridge lessons, tournaments and recreation.

Campers were divided into four groups -- Clubs, Diamonds, Hearts and Spades -- based on their bridge experience. Five to six hours a day was devoted to bridge lessons and play in sectional-rated pair and Swiss team games. A list of all winners is here.

Bryan Delfs, education program manager for ACBL, served as tournament director and teacher of the Hearts group. He told the campers that his name was "Director Please".

The camp program also included free time every day to enjoy sports, including volleyball, racquetball, archery, "9-square" basketball, mini-golf and pool. The lakefront offered swimming, paddleboats, slides and the very popular water trampoline.

Chris and Mary Lattan Shaw of Carlinville founded the camp in 2009 and they work year-round to plan and promote it. The ACBL Education Foundation provided a grant to set up the first camp. Other support has been provided by Southern Illinois Unit 223, the District 8 Board, duplicate clubs in Edwardsville and Effingham, and individual donors.

The next Youth Bridge Camp is scheduled for June 23 through July 3, 2015.
