Thank you ...

... to all of the Unit 223 players who recently attended the Metropolis Split Regional. We had a most successful tournament this year. More than 5133 masterpoints were won by 423 players, and I heard many positive comments from players at the tournament.

Special thanks are due to all the Unit 223 volunteers who made the tournament run so smoothly and successfully in 2009, with a special acknowledgement to Tommy Wynn (Paducah KY) who did a fantastic job chairing the tournament. Please, when you see him, thank him and tell him what a great time you had. Thanks also go to Maxine Wynn, Villa Aschenbrenner, Ron & Janet Brotherson, Dalton & Marcia Darnell, Doug Edwards, Sandra & Larry Lemon, and Jim Kallaher - all of whom were "hands on" workers at the Regional.

In Memory

My friend Virgil Holdeman died on May 13. He played on the Monday evening before his death. He was hacking around with a cough. I suggested he see a doctor. He let me know he already had appointment the next morning. I called him on Tuesday afternoon to check on him and he said the doctor gave him some antibiotics and said he would be fine. He died during the night.

Before I got off the phone, I told him that I was looking forward to playing with him the next Monday evening. He said he was, too.

Virgil started the club in Highland IL at my urging several years ago. When Billie Harrison dropped from the board because of his illness with Lou Gehrig's Disease, Virgil got on the board at my urging.

Virgil was a fine man and a real asset to bridge in our area and our unit. We had a lot of good times playing bridge together (won a rookie pairs about 20 years ago in St. Louis and he was as excited as a kid with a special prize, 66 years old at the time). I will sorely miss him.           -- Ray Sigler

     Virgil's obituary is here.
