Concentration, confidence, competitive urge, capacity for enjoyment.”

 -- Arnold Palmer

Tom Oppenheimer

Listed above are Arnold Palmer’s 4 C’s for winning at golf. These same traits mark the best duplicate competitors, and Tom Oppenheimer is one of the best. In addition to being a top competitor, Tom is also a highly respected teacher and mentor.

Although Tom attained Platinum Life Master ranking several years ago, he was recognized in this April’s Bridge Bulletin for reaching the 15,000 masterpoint milestone.

Congratulations to a champion!

Senior Olympics add Duplicate Bridge

Senior Olympics is limited to participants at least 50 years old, and most Senior Olympics events are contests of physical skill. Duplicate bridge is considered a “mind game.” However, this  year, thanks largely to the efforts of Unit 143’s Sue Perez and Phil Ruben, Senior Olympics Director for St. Louis, Duplicate Bridge will be a Senior Olympics event.

The Duplicate Bridge Senior Olympic event, which is ACBL Sanctioned Duplicate Bridge, will take place on Friday, May 27, 2016 at 2:30 pm at St. Louis Bridge Center. Register with a partner. If you do not have a partner, you may show up and will be paired with another player if possible.

For more information, visit www.stlouisbridge.org. Or click here for the St. Louis Senior Olympics website to register for Duplicate Bridge and other events on this year’s schedule.

Spring Sectional

March Madness and major league baseball aren’t the only signs of Spring. On May 13-15, 2016, Unit 143 will host its Spring Sectional in St. Charles MO.  Join us for friendly competition and delicious hospitality. Two named events are Friday’s Bobby Riggs Stratified Open and Saturday morning’s Carole Burt Open Swiss to honor recently deceased Unit members who were active as board members. The full schedule is here.

Spring 299er Tournament

Another first: This spring’s novice tournament graduated from a 199er to a 299er. On Saturday, April 2 and Sunday, April 3, players at 71.5 tables competed in three sessions. Lee Hastings, tournament chair, and Beth Percich, director, maintained the spirit of friendly competition.

I was first introduced to tournament play at novice events. Besides the fun of competitive play and thrill of winning my first trophy, I remember the encouragement and support from fellow players that kept me coming back as I learned the game.

Congratulations to these overall winners (l. to r., Saturday AM, Saturday Aft and Sunday AM sessions):
