In Memoriam

Bob Krull of Hobart was born on May 31, 1919 and passed away on January 27, 2009. He received a Civil Engineering degree from Purdue University, where he was a member of the Purdue Marching Band. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, WWII. Bob was a member of the Hobart Lions Club, Orak Shrine, and the Rusty Pipes (instrumental musical group). He owned and operated Krull & Son, Inc. with his sons and grandson. Krull & Son, Inc. (land surveyors) was founded by his father in 1914.

Bob was loved by all his fellow bridge players. He was easy-going and a friend to all, with never a negative word spoken. His ready smile and easy demeanor spread happiness and kindness wherever he went. He enjoyed the game of bridge and played often at the games in his home/office building. He had about 270 masterpoints. Players enjoyed his concerts in the park.

Joe McGuan of Munster died on March 14 at the age of 78. Joe was a graduate of Northwestern University and served as president of Albert Ramond & Associates in Chicago. Joe was an excellent water skier. He would wear a dress suit and could stay high enough above the water so that his suit was completely dry when he got off the skis. The last time he skied was at the age of 70.

Joe was an extremely good uncle and great-uncle to his nieces and nephews and was very generous. He would take his nieces and nephews to a lake at his grandparents' cottage where they would hunt quail. Joe was a Silver Life Master with about 1360 masterpoints. He loved the game and was helpful to beginners at the bridge table.

90th Birthday Celebrant

Cathy Mason (left) of Portage -- our oldest club player -- became a nonagenarian on March 24. Her spryness, mental acuity, and her happy looks belie that fact.

This momentous occasion was celebrated at a Calumet Township game with a sumptuous feast and a room decorated with posters and balloons. Cathy was presented a silk yellow rose floral arrangement on behalf of all the players. Interspersed among the yellow roses were a half dozen roses of a rather greenish color — apparent in the accompanying photo. The petals in those special roses totaled one dollar for every year of Cathy's life.

Cathy was a former bridge director and is a Silver Life Master with slightly over 1250 masterpoints. She is admired for her winning personality, her acceptance of everyone, and her proficiency at the bridge table.
