Club news: Big dollars raised in Springfield

The Wednesday-evening Springfield Duplicate Bridge Club raised a record amount during a recent charity game held for Hope Presbyterian Church, who lost part of their roof during the recent tornadoes in Sprinffield.

The 4.5-table game raised $400. Liz Zalar, owner and manager of the club, said her members felt especially strong about doing something to help the Church and decided on a charity game and pot-luck dinner. Liz said she thought they would do well to raise $50, but she miscalculated the strong feelings her players have for the congregation of Hope.

"They are very kind to us and make us feel like family," said Liz. She said it also helped that the treasurer of the Church is Libby Fox, an 82-year-old newcomer to the duplicate games, and the minister's mother-in-law is Elsa Avery, who is also a regular player.

"I was thrilled to be able to make the donation, but not as thrilled as when Pastor Debra Avery and her office staff hugged me with tears in their eyes," said Liz. "I know every club owner/manager thinks she has great members. I can truthfully say I know mine are and they prove themselves to be great every time I see them at or away from the table."
